isonic question

Hi

I have already decided for an isonic 86, but i am thinking that maybe i should get a 96 or 101 litre. I'm 70 kg and i'm mostly going to sail a 6.5 on the board. What do you think?

What are the wind conditions and what board do you use when you are on the 6.5 now?

What are the prevailing wind conditions in your area?

Fresh or salt water?

Smooth, choppy or rough?

This will help someone give you a recommendation.

Hi!

I will sail mostly in choppy water, but also a bit of flatwater. The water is salty. At the moment I have an old 90 litre starboard sonic. The wind is mostly force 5 (15-20 knots).

I don't have experience with the smaller Isonics, I have a new 111 and weight 80kg. I bought it for 7.5 sailing, but will use sails from 6.5 to 8.5. I sail fresh water with variable winds, so I like something that won't sink if the wind drops to 5 knots.

At 70kg, I think you are fine with the 86 if you have consistent winds in the 15 to 20 knot range. If you have marginal conditions, the 96 will keep you afloat in the big holes, but you will get more range with the 86.

Since you have been on a 90 L board and a 6.5 sail, you need to decide if you are more likely to go down a sail size (iS86) or up a sail size (iS96).

Hopefully, some other sailors with more experience with the isonics can offer some advice.

Hi I'm 70kg and have a 101 that I sail with 6.5 and 7.5. It is easy to uphaul (even though it is only actually 96 or 97 litres but when powered up with my 6.5 it feels too big. My advice would be to go for 86 or 96 but have no experience with either. I also think it depends a little on the style of sail, if you are going the full cambered race sail or one level down I find slightly more volume helps me deal with the weight of the sail - but I'm just a recreational blaster.

To replace your Sonic 90 in your configuration, go for the iSonic 86. You will plane earlier and have an excellent relunch after the jibe. The board will also be more easy in strong due a good lenght stability.

i would get a 96 isonic because of my dad is about the same weight and he rides mostly a 6.7 sail and he still has plenty of bouantcy.

Hi ?

Do you have smaller sails than your currently largest 6.5 m2 sail ?
Do you plan to sail your slalom board in strong wind ?
Do you plan to get a sail larger than your 6.5 m2 in the future for wind lighter than Force 5 ?
Have you got other boards or do you want only 1 board to do it all ?

Same weight as the orginal poster and 6.5m is the workhorse sail. I note that the 101 and larger have one set of footstrap holes only whereas the smaller boards have more choices. Together with the plan shapes that indicates that the 96 is going to be a better ride in 18 kt + winds than the 101. Then the 86 would have to be better again if you are looking at a sail in the 5.* m range while previous posts suggest that a 7.* sail is not out of the question (but probably not ideal) for a one board iS86 solution?
