2009 Serenity

Reviewing the graphic depictions of both models on the Product selection side of things for the new 2009 models, and I noted that the fin/dagger position shown on the boards' underside is currently shown below the handle feature (much closer to the mast track). This doesn't seem right because the top side graphic still shows some sort of covered cavity in the area associated with fin/dagger position of the 2007/2008 models

I think that a clarification of this important design feature is needed to properly represent the new models' configuration.

Hi SteveC,

Thanks for pointing it out; the finbox drawn on to the bottom side of the board is in the wrong position, it should be aligned with the fin recess/cup holder on the deck side, not the carry handle. We'll get that fixed right away.

Thanks Tiesda for your answer on this. It confirmed what I was thinking and readily eliminates any misunderstanding.

I'm still a bit curious though about the added small fin at the rear of the board. I'm thinking that it tightens up the straight line tracking of the board, particularly to windward, but I was wondering whether its addition makes the tacking or jibing a bit more technical? Also, is there a chance that a view of the small fin will be added somewhere on the Starboard website?

Thinking back on the video that Remi posted on the forum a few months back, I remember that the board included a small fin at the tail of the board. Seems fairly clear now that the board was very likely a prototype for the 2009 model.

The small tail fin makes sense to me. I've noticed the tail wiggle when sailing it. May make turning harder though.

Hi Steve and Randy,

The new Serenity does have that extra tail fin - I'll ask our graphic designer to add that to the website too. It basically looks like one of those small freestyle fins. The tail fin adds quite alot of tracking stability. When it comes to jibing or tacking, the new shape is actually much easier to turn. The nose has a rounded hull shape instead of a sharp spine that is on the 2008 model. This sharp spine made the 2008 model pretty hard to push through the eye of the wind after a tack for example. The new one, because of that round hull shape in the nose, goes around the eye of the wind alot easier: it doesn't catch.

The other big difference is in the feeling of power when riding the new the board, which comes from the extra thickness and more power-orientated rail shapes under your heels. The new Serenity is alot more powerful and that feeling combined with the extra tracking stability adds up to make the whole package faster more exciting to ride. It's still one of my favourite boards in the range.

Does this mean that the Mk II will be more of a handful at the top end of its range?
Importand if only for the need to get back (usually down!) home if the wind picks
up a bit.
