a good high wind sail

sailing in a slalom event yesterday i got hammered.

wind 25/35, gusting maybe higher.

on a 5.0m race sail rigged for survival mode,i could not gybe as still too much power in sail.

could hardly sail in straight line as well, although this was not the biggest problem.

when i managed to gybe, i was going so deep around mark that next mark almost became an upwind leg.

many on wave sails 4m-5m doing really well.

thinking now of buying my first wave sail.

thinking 4m or less for my 67kg in winds 25+ knots.

any advice.

i have NO experience with that, but the james douglass sail calculator suggests 3.6 for your weight @ 25 knots and 3.0 for 30 knots

with that size, you might as well use your shorts as a sail :-)

man , the board must be tiny tooooo

That calculator is completely ridiculous, it says I should be taking sails some times almost 1m less than I do take out.

I would go for a cross over sail, like a NP Firefly 4.1m or 4.5m. Will probably be better for racing than a full on wave sail.

That being said I have a HSM Smack in 5.3 for medium to high wind and it's great to have a bullet proof sail as you can go out stressfree.

The step down from a 5.0 race sail ought to be something like a 4.0, maybe even 3.7. At your 68 kg it is not a sail for extreme winds, but a good high wind sail size.

Remember to get yourself a short enough mast for the sail so that it actually twists properly!

Way too small a suggested sail IMHO:

I'm using powerwave sails for my 65 kg as follows:
20-25 knots : 5.4 m2
25-30 knots : 4.7 m2
30-35 knots : 4.2 m2
35-40 knots : 3.6 m2
40-45 knots : 3.3 m2
45+ knots : 3.0 m2

Bear in mind that the range of a full-on cambered racing sail is larger than that of a no-cam wave sail.

looking at buying a neil pryde 3.9m the fly.

should be a good bit easier in 25 knots plus than my 5.0m.

race sails tend to be made not much less than 5.0m size.

I can aausre you a 5.0 TR-5 from MauiSails can handle that.

I'm assuming you already have a 85 or 75l board. Don't forget to purchase fins to match the sail. One for overpowered and one for normal power.

My quiver 6.6 5.5 4.8 4.2 3.6 175lbs.

i bought a tushingham rock 3.3m instead of 3.9m the fly. also had to buy second hand 370 mast x6 and small carbon boom to fit. good forecast 20/30 knots for tomorrow,can't wait. hope i use it more than a few times per year.
