Sail set: help

Hi
Mi friend, has a Futura 121 that uses with a Severne 7.5 Element (2 cams). He wants an smaller sail that cover a high wind spectrum with this board. Witch size do you recommend him? 6.0, 6.5 or 6.7.

A long time ago I would have said get the 6.5 but with the range of today's sails that has changed. I weigh 80 kg and I can easily get on a plane with my 6.0 Naish Redline long before I get blown off the water with my 7.6 Naish Stealth. Of course that is 3 & 4 cams, not 2.

So if similar weight I would say get the 6.0 and a smaller fin.

I have a 122 futura and have comfortably used a 5.8 6.2and 6.5 . 7.7. 8.5. 9.5 without any great problems the 9.5 being just about on the limit but the 5.8 being fine. One of the benefits of the future(As I see it) is that as the wind and chop increase the board stays in control especially in chop so the need to change to a smaller board is delayed tried it with a 5.2 in 30mph sail fine but board far too big so 5.8 would be the smallest I would use(90k) Of course it depends on what you mean by high wind spectrum.There is a limit in the comfort level yes you could use a 122 with a 3.8 in 35knts but wouldn't be very nice.I would say that with a 121 size board anything below 5.5 then it's time to change to a board below 100 litres if you haven't got one then off to the bar for a few beers

Your friend's weight has a lot to do with the the range of the 122 and sail choices. Knowing his weight will help with our advice. I weight 78kg and I find that jumping from my 7.6 to my 6.0 is significant (too big). I think a one meter jump in mid size sails is pretty good for me. The smaller the sails, the smaller the gap in size.

You can see my sails below, but I just recently added the 6.0 because I found the gap between my old one cam 5.7 and new TR 6.6 was too large, thus adding the 6.0. I probably will sell the 5.7.

Now the decision will be driven by money and dedication. An easy going sailor with limited funds my get by with a three sail quiver. On the other hand, a guy like me currently has 10 sails.

The more money you have committed to windsurfing and with a high level of dedication, you end up with a lot of sails with small size gaps between them.

For most beginning sailors, it's probably better to take a more balanced approach, so I would recommend a 6.5 for the next sail. However, he will find that he will need a smaller sail and a smaller board when the wind goes over 18-20 knots. A board around 95-100 liters and a 5.5 sail should be next.

His dude was about 6.0 or 6.5 because he was afraid 6.5 were too close of his 7.5 Severne Element, or 6.0 too far.
Actually he has a 95l FreeWave that he use with 5.7 in waves, 4.7 and 5.3 in choppy water.
With a smaller and cambered sail under 7.5 he could get more great flat water days in his favourite board (Futura 121).

If he has a 5.7 and 7.5, then a 6.5 should fit just right.
