Default iS 121 vs. iS 111 for 82 Kg guy, ~8sqm sail 12-15kts

Hi Team, Hi All,

planing threshold? I know both boards will fly as soon as they get going but with how little can they start planing (with sufficient sailor input...) with a ~ 8 sqm sail at 82 Kgs?

Hi Duracell,

I 'm 86 kg and get a freeride board similar to the futura 122 planing from 11 knots. I've tried it last weekend with a 9.5 sail, merely as an experiment because I wanted to know if my board could handle this sail size.
From 12 - 15 knots I normally use the same board with 8.5 & 7.5 m2 sails without any problem. An IS 121 shoud plane even faster because of the bigger tail width.

Wether the IS 111 would do the same job for your weight, I leave up to the team to answer.

Defo got to be the iS121/8m in the 12k to 15k range. I can get my iS111 going in 12k ish with an 8m but you will have no sensation of power, the 9m/iS111/powerfull fin would be my choice in those lighter winds, but even then I would much prefer to be on a iS131/144. I'm 105kg if that helps

I dont think the iS111 is right for you, take the iS121, easy choice

Duracell,

You should be able to plane on both boards in 12-15 knots with an 8.0. You will have to pump the 111 a bit to get going, but once it begins to plane, it accelerates quite fast.

I have an iS 111, but don't like using my 8.4 on it. I am estimating that it will plane in about 11-12 knots if there is a steady wind. However, where I sail the wind is highly variable with 5-15 knots being the norm for a light/moderate wind day. This is where I would use the 8.4, but I get stuck with frequent slogging when the board comes off plane. I only weigh 78kg and the slogging is a pain in the a## with the 8.4, so I wait until there is more wind and use my 7.6.

I have my formula board for the 5-15 knot days.

Hi Folks,

what about the iS 121, what would the lowest wind be to start planing (at 82 Kg) using
a) 8.1 sail + stock fin
b) 9.5 sail + 47cm or 49cm Select SL7 fin?

c) what about the iS 111 with 8.1-8.8 sail and 49cm Select SL7?

Yeh, 10 knots sounds about right. I can get my Futura 93l to plane with a 5.6m in about 12 knots (I'm 55kgs). With the 9.5m and the much wider tail of the iSonic 121, I reckon planning in 10 knots is feasible, definitely 11-12knots for sure.

As Mark said, when you get planing at the very limit of the windspeed needed, the you have no power in board and staying in the straps for long generally doesn't happen...

I think the 121 could carry a 9.5m (team input needed here) as Tiesda You claims he can use a 9.0m on his 101, though SB are very generous in their windrange stats...

Guess this shows the iS121 + 9.0m sail/board combo works.

Well here are my humble impressions:

- forum should be renamed to : don't ask the team, they won't answer anyway
- some people just post a lot of non personal experience (very questionable)

besides that I went for the iS 121 WC (little pun, WC means toilet in German... hope its better than that).

Oh and again thanks team...
