Hello,
Planning a holiday on the lake in August. Hoping to camp with the family in one of the sites right on the waterfront. Which is the best place for windsurfing in Garda? I seem to remember Malcesine fondly ... Thanks! |

If you want to camp, 2 places: Torbole & Malcesine.
Malcesine is better with Vento (Northern wind, very early in the morning). Torbole is better with Ora (Southern wind, in the afternoon). THE BEST place of the entire lake for both Vento & Ora is just below Riva on the west coast. Hotel Pier and the hotel just below it (I forgot the name) always have several knots more of wind. And they know about it. You can only access the water via the hotels. That means you have to stay in the hotel, because they don't allow trespassing. Parking your car over there is IMPOSSIBLE. Another good spot, more southly on the west coast is Campione for both Ora & Vento. Payed parking is possible. It's the only place where you'll also find Kite surfers. Hope this helps. |

Hi All, correct name for northern wind is PELER, not Vento. Please, check this link http://www.pradelafam.net/body/spot.shtml for a clickable map and guide to Garda Lake best spots. All the best. Last edited by Expander; 10th June 2010 at 01:47 PM. |

Hi from Nico, Venice, Italy
There are mainly two winds in the famous north part of Lake Garda. The Peler that blows from north since the early morning until not more than 9-10 a.m. The best place to go out is Malcesine on east side, it's a town in Veneto near the boarder of Trentino, little more south than Riva and Torbole. And then the Ora, the wind from the south, starting about at noon, 1 p.m., usually unfortunately lighter in august when it's too hot. Best place is Torbole and especailly Conca d'Oro, 2 km south from Torbole town, or some spot on the rocky west coast. Beside Segnana surf center there is a parking ground, you can rig on grass and there's wi-fi free on all area. If you book on Hotel Pier center you can go from bed to windsurf directly. |

Hehehe out of topic, but..
Not so much wind here in northeast of Italy. Anyway it depends, at home in Venice downtown I use to take my parent's (traditional) boat, go out on northern side of Venice up to the north side of Murano island, anchor the boat, rig in shallow water and then freeride there. In the rest of the world (Garda Lake, S. Croce Lake, Sottomarina, trips to sardinia, Tuscany, Danmark last summer) I go as usual for everyone with my car, but as you know in Venice there are no car so I keep mine in the outskirts, Mestre, fully loaded from april to the end of october (the I switch to snowboard). Yes I got two quivers, one (the older) for my home and one for the rest of the world. This is living in Venice. Nico |

If you mean Iron beach club, no, for me is easier going out from Venice when at home, or instead S. Croce Lake or (trying to learn wave...) in Sottomarina when at work outside Venice. Iron beach in front of chemical factories is not the kind of spot that I like... (no, varda andar fora davanti ale cisterne e fin al ponte de la Libertà proprio no me fa voia, mejo partir da le barene in mezo ai aironi e planar verso l'aeroporto o Buran) (venetian slang sorry) |

Sempre e solo a Poiatte, giorni feriali. Tutte vele Hot Sails Maui (a parte una yes 8)
For S. Croce Lake my spot is Poiatte, now it's very nice with a lot of parking, bar, pier to go down in the water, small and nice rental and school windsurf center. (fasemo capir anca i americani cussì) |
