The Irish Windsurfing Intervarsities 2013 took place from the 5th to the 7th of April 2013, in Galway. It was a very successful event with some of Ireland’s best student windsurfers competing for their University. Starboard was there with them, braving the cold waters to give you a review of the weekend.
This year, the Intervarsities were hosted by the National University of Ireland Galway, in Colaiste Uisce, Belmulet. This is one of the best places for windsurfing in Ireland as it's located on the wild west coast which is notorious for strong winds all year round. Over the weekend there were many races held for the students and lots to do, including beginner, intermediate and advanced dry clinics. On Sunday afternoon, the wind picked up and the crowd were treated to a freestyle demo from two of Ireland’s top freestyle windsurfers.
There was also an expression session on Sunday, where students dressed up and headed out for a freestyle session. The winner of the expression session, Rose Barrett from the University of Limerick (UL), was presented with the Mikey Clancy Cup. This cup was a tribute to Mikey Clancy, one of Ireland’s top professional windsurfers who sadly passed away earlier this year.
NUIG would like to thank all of their sponsors that contributed to making the weekend possible; Starboard, Tushingham, BigSurf, Uisce, The Broadhaven Hotel, Red Bull, Kerry Sail Company, NUIG, IWA, Jamie Knox, Rusheen Bay, The Great Outdoors, River Deep Mountain High and the San Aer crew. Starboard were happy to present a large number of prizes to all the winners and we are all looking forward to the next event already.
