Hi,
I weigh about 82kg and my height is about 5/11. I sail in condition from 15knt to 30+ flat and choppy water conditions. I have a 2008 Starboard Futura 111 with the stock 38cm fin, Ive been using this board for 5 months now, my current sails a 4.7, 5.2, 6.1 but I am finding the 6.1 is a bit small for 15knts and am finding it hard to get on the plane. It may be my early planning skills in marginal conditions that are the issue or a combination of both. But I feel that it may be the sail size? I have just bought a 2009 86 kode for the high wind days, so I want to use the Futura in lower wind range. What size sail would work best for the Futura 111 for the 15 20knt wind range? Thanks Jez |

Hey Jez,
I'd go something around the 7m-7.5m range. Either Cambered or no cam would work well. I also have a Futura111 and use this board with a 7m no cam sail. I also weight 82kg and get going in 13+ knots with this setup and easily sail in up to 18-20 knots. I would also suggest a good fin. I use a 38 & 40cm C3 Venom on this board. 6.1m to 7m is a good gap also. |

Ezzy Freeride 8,0 is perfect. I cant see that this sail exist (www.ezzy.com), but I do have it.

Jez,
The largest recommended sail for the new Futura 111's is 8.0. Usually, as you approach the upper limit, things get out of balance and the fun factor diminishes. I would go with RadiantX. 7.5 should be your largest sail on that board and it should work well in the 15 - 20 knot range at your weight.

Hi Jez, i have a F111 and have used it with 7.0 and 7.5 NPv8's. I would agree with radientX's comments. The 7.0 works really well and is a good gap with your 6.1. The 7.5's ok on flat water, with the right fin (i use select RS 41, however in the ocean with a big swell, i feel i;m not really getting much advantage out of it, plus it feels alittle awkward. The 7.0 is a sweet spot. I use it with a select SL9 39. Im 86kg and 6'.0

Hi there.
Yes IŽagree that most of the brands recommends to big sails as the upper limit (Fanatics for example). BUT: With my Ezzy freeride 8,0, IŽm sailng with a very high degre of a comfortable possition with the rig, feet and the body. But I think its important to a sail with a typical "power forward" sail as Ezzy sails. Here in the south of Sweden we have to use weedfins. The weedfins have a bigger area related to the depth of the fin. May be its therefor it will function so well. Interesting if anybody can discuss a bit. Hey Guys,
Thanks for all the advice, much appreciated. Im going to go for a 7m non cambered sail, as that sounds like it will have the perfect wind range for the board. Cheers Jez |

Hi Jez, i've also used my F111 with a NP7.2 hellcat (non cambered sail). Non cambered sails do feel a little lighter, hence a 7.0-7.3 non cambered sail would work well. The NPv8's do feel a little heavier, hence the comments about the 7.5V8

Last year I used 7.5m V8 on my F111 with a Select SL7 39cm. It worked real well and I would not go bigger. This year I'm using 7.0m RSS MkIV and have not had much wind to try it out and sort out which fin I should use.
Any where between 7.0m and 7.5m would suit. Myself I would recommend a 2 or 3 cambered sail in these sizes. |
