Hello
I have always had cambered sails and as they are little harder to rig is it important? What do the cambers realy do? I have a 6.5, 7.5, 8.5 cambered sails and the 7.5 meter one needs to be replaced, falling apart. What is a good sail to replace it with? Light, easy to handle and fast? I also have a 5 meter Superfreak which is great but I think will not be great for a larger sail I sail in a low wind area around Boston, MA Thanks |

Since I am short on time, you could search the Archives for this topic. It's been discussed many times before. There is no simple answer, it's more personal preference than function for recreational sailors. For racers, they clearly go for cambers.

Alena, my personnel preference for sails of 7.5m and below is not to have cams, go for something like an NCX Pro or a Neil Pryde Hellcat if you don't want cams but want a stable sail if it gets a little gusty. Many of the newer two cam sails these days are nearly as easy to rig. This really does all depend on your board, sailing location and preference, speed or fun.......

alena,
better in cam sails: -wider windrange -more stable -earlier planning -better topend speed -better topend control better in camless sails: -faster rigging -lighter -easier jibing -easier uphauling -easier waterstart -cheaper at boston's low wind area i would keep the cam sails for you for sure. cheers, gyurmo |

Alena,
What are your current cam sails : full-on racing sails or freeracing sails ? Do you have 100% or 75% or less carbon masts to rigg your cam sail ? Choosing the correct mast is of uttermost importance for a full-on racing sail: some masts match perfectly, other do not match at all... ! What kind of boards do you have to match your cambered sails ? Cheers ! JM |
