Background: 63kg sailor
Wind target: mostly 15-25 knots Sail size: NP zone 5.6 and 5.0 mostly, occasionaly 4.5 or rarely under. Sailing target: onshore wind driven waves, bump and jump Local store has the Evo 74 in stock. Should I bother looking for an Evo 70? |

For your 63 kg evo 70 should be the best but with your range of sails the 74 seems to be better. I choose the 74 if I was you

Hi drzone, I'm 68kg and have an Evo 74 but wish it was a 70. My feeling is that the 70 will be right for you more of the time than the 74. For me the 74 feels like a big board because of the width - don't get me wrong, I love the 74 but have started thinking about complementing it with 62 for 5.0 and below.

Hi drzone. I'm 69 kilos and have sailed both 74 and 70 EVOs a lot. No doubt will the E70 give you as a 60kg rider the biggest range both regarding sail sizes (wind strength) and types of waves. Even for me the 70 is more allround. However, since you rarely go below 4.5, this shifts the result a bit so its pretty much either way. I wouls still say the 70 has a slight edge, but if you can't find one you can safely go for the E74. This will also give room for a future 62 maybe (which will be a board to die for at your weight).

Hi Drzone,
you are quite light, but the wind you are sailing in most of the time is light, too. Take the 74 l board and will have a much bigger windrange to sail in and your 5.6 will work much better. Ola?s recommendation with the 62 as a strongwind option is a great idea. Go for it, Chris

Thansk for all your feedback. That was very helpful.
Evo 74 it will be and if I like it, probably even try the Kid's 62, warranty or not! Just to check, I don't think there is a major difference between 2005 and 2006 other than the fin and moving the concave back. Should I get a 23-24 CNC to go with the 5.6 sail? Thanks. |

No shape difference at all between 05 and 06 on the 74 (the 80->83 had lots of change). 06 Fin is a wonder though. Straps are nicer too. With a 5.6 I tend to sail the Drake Natural (cnc) 23 or 24. You can even use the 25 too for B&J, but at your weight the 24 will do the trick.

I used to sail the 74 2006 wood and I loved it. But I found the 74 small with a 5,5. With a bigger fin it was fine though (23cm). But do you think a 5,6 will work on the evo 70? Isn't the board to small for a 5,5?

Cuno,
It will depend on your weight. I'm just below 70 and a 5.6 is OK on an EVO 70 with an apropriate fin. The EVO 74 will be slightly more effective with this big a sail, but the difference is not huge. If you're closer to 60 kilos the difference will be even smaller. |
