Default 9.5 in an Stype?

Hi Roger,

I am planing on buying an Stype 137 or a Carve 144. I use moustly two sails an Ezzy Infinity 9.5 and an Neil Pryde 6.2 and weight 95kg. I sail moustly in light to medium winds 10-22 knots. So mine question is can I use the Infinity with the Stype? I am tending to the Stype because of the less volume.

Thanks

Diego

Hi Diego,
In looking at the recommended sail sizes on under the "Products" site, the S-Type 137 only recommends an 8.5 m2 rig as the largest.
At 72 cm wide, that may be the largest sail you can realistically use, and the S-Type, even with a big sail, is not going to be an early planer.
The Carve 144, on the other hand, does recommend up to 9.5 m2 rigs, and since it's 78 cm wide, it's going to plane significantly earlier.
I'd go with the Carve 144 unless you can test the S-Type 137 with your rig, before you make the purchase.
Hope this helps,

Funny, since my FT138 fell apart I've been using my ST137 with a 9.5 and the stock fin (at ~ 80 Kg). Works quite well, planing at ~ 9-10 knots (just can't put any load whatsoever on the fin). From 11-12 knots on it starts to go at a halfway decent speed (till around 14 kts the FT138 will kick ST137 ass anytime). I've been caught out with that sail in stronger winds (gusting 18 knots) and it still "worked" (good enough to get home in a respectable way). In that wind it did start to skid (could'nt convert power into speed anymore, rigged down to a 6.8 and spent some time hanging in the sky ).
