Question: Which ISonic fit better, IS 101 or IS 111

Hello surfers!

At the moment i own an IS 122 (2009) and a Futura 111. I sail these boards with Code red (8,1 and 7,0) and Gator 6,0 (only for the F 111). Last weekend I sailed my IS 122 with the code red 7,0 at about 18-25 knt. Partially it wasn´t easy to control the IS 122 (i used the R 13 40 cm). I want to replace the F 111 by a smaller ISonic (2009), IS 101 or IS 111. My weight is 94 kg.
I don´t plan to buy a smaller slalom sail than the Code red 7,0.It happens that I sail in gusty conditions.
Which ISonic would you suggest.

Hi Remi!

I often surf on a spot where the wind in the beach area (400 meter) is 2 BF lower than outside on the open water. That´s why I consider the IS 111. Do you think that floating with the IS 101 is possible regarding my weight (94 kg). What are the differents between IS 101 and IS 111?

Can I combine IS 111 with Gator 6,0?

I am much lighter (70Kg) and generally sail my Is-111 with a 7.3. I used it once with a 6.0 and it worked ok, although it is a small sail for the board that did not feel to well balanced with it. The Is-111 should float you ok, but I do not think the IS-101 will do (I think is really 94L or so?). (I might be selling my Is-111 to get a Is-122, drop me an e-mail).

Thanks for your answer. As I wrote before, I want to replace my F 111 by an IS. Thats why I intend to contact my windsurf-shop.

The iS111 will have to much cross over with your iS122. No real big benefit in having both the iS111 and iS122. The iS101 and iS122 would give you much bigger range of use. In 18 to 25k, your 7m and an iS101 will be plenty. If you do get caught out in lower winds on the outside, the iS101 will float you and a 7m. Although uphauling will be a bit tricker in swell, but pretty easy to do.

Walter,

I too think the iS 101 would best fit your needs, but it will be a SINKER for your 94kg. It isn't going to float you! Some guys can uphaul with the water at their knees, and others have trouble with the surface of the board above the water.

For me at 78 kg, I find that 105 L is the point where it is still relatively easy to uphaul with the board surface dry. Below 100 L, the board is beginning to go underwater.

It's a skill that takes practice, but it can be really frustrating when you are stuck 100 meters from shore and can't water start and you must uphaul a sinker and slog to shore.

How often do you have 18 + knot winds where the 101 would be the board of choice?

I have a iS 111 and if the wind is 18 - 25 knots, I am on a smaller board. I use the 111 in the 12 to 18 knot range.

During holiday it happens every second day that I can use the code red 7,0. I think I go for the IS111 because uphauling isn´t my thing and the 7,0 should also fit to IS 111.

Why do you want to drop the F 111 at all?
Straps out and back and a good slalom fin and the F111 is very close to an IS.
Size like it fits in between IS111/101, has a bigger range than an IS, easier when slogging.
If you are competing on national/international level you go IS122/101, IS122/111 makes no sense,
If not, keep the F111. The IS111 is closer to the IS122 than F111.
So IS122/F111 makes more sense for me than IS122/IS111.
