Formula Harness Lines

Do Formula racers use extra long harness lines to help them hold down their huge sails (>30")?

I noticed that a lot of racers have their booms super high as well...

Hi Agrelon,
Yes but not only them, Race-Board and Rsx racers use even longer.
In PWA also almost all the riders are using very long harness line to close the gap at any time in any condition, this help a lot

Personally I am using 26 to 36 one and use them from 30 to 36 depend of the condition

Hmm, I'm using 28 for the moment but I generally run my boom quite low...

Do you think I'll see speed gains with a higher boom and slightly longer lines (say 30-32")? I know that with these lines I can't completely push the rig away for more power, so maybe having shorter lines is choking my sail slightly.

Also, because I'm gonna home-make some to save money (that C3 Venom emptied my wallet nicely, hehe), I take it the size of the harness line is the length measured of the line stretched out?

Hi Agrelon,

The best anyway is to have an adjustable one so can test differents possibility to fit you in any condition. Fix one limit the trim posibility only by making boom hi or low.

Agrelon,

Formula sailors need long lines when running deep down wind. If you are too close to the rig, you will get tossed over the nose. Upwind, the lines are shortened for more efficient upwind sailing.

Since most if not all formula sailors use seat harnesses, long lines are necessary because of the low hook. Booms need to be high for the downwind runs since the rig gets raked back quite a bit and if the booms are low, you get stuck in a squatting position in the straps and can't stand up straight.

Bottom line - long adjustable lines.

Us speed sailors also use longer lines too. High boom and 28 to 32 harness lines,fixed are also 1/2 the price of adj ones.

I'm assuming the adjustment goes something along the lines of:

More length for:

- Rougher conditions
- Stronger wind
- Downwind runs (not sure here)?
Less length for:

- Flatter water
- Underpowered
- Upwind runs (again not sure)?
