Board Stuck in Bag

Hi

Due to a knee op I have been off the water for a while, went out today but the zips on one of my board bags have "salted solid". Anybody know a quick and easy way of freeing them without buggering the zip?

Hi John,
Yep, that's a problem.
Here's what I have done to free "slated solid" zippers.
Spray them with a good penetrating fluid. I use TC-11, but Balistol has worked also. Let it soak for a dayor 2.
The get a hot water hose and run hot water on the zip closure for a while.
Between these 2 "treatments" I've been able to get most zippers working again.
Use a short piece of line on the closure hook (not the zipper pull as you will pull that off).
Jerk the line in both directions with the hot water flowing on the zip closure.
Works most of the time.
Then lube the zipper with soap or zipper lube to prevent it happening again.

Hello, John,

Further to Roger's excellent advice, I have found that very hot water by itself "usually" breaks the zip free. We had a terrific day here today and one of my friends had to use his smallest sail and found the zip corroded fast. I poured hot water onto the zip (carry it with me because it's winter here) and the zip freed up within 30 seconds.

If the above does not work, try soaking the zipper/sled in vineger. Smelly...but it will solve the salty, corroded stuff.

Don't take you're most expensive balsamic vineger....white wine vineger and apple cider based stuff works fine...

I have used with great success a steam house cleaner (vaporetta, as they call it in Italy and Spain). It allowed me to recover a zipper that had been blocked for more than a year. Just direct the steam to the salt blocks and they dissolve. Just be careful that you do not overheat the board (i.e: push it as far as you can to the opposite side of the bag)

Go to a coin operated car wash and blast the zipper with the spray.
