Hey Taty, I've been wondering for a while now about the differences between the new Gaastra echos and the Maui locos. I know your bro and Kiri ride echos and you pretty much designed the locos so could you give any incite on this? Right now I ride locos witch I really like. I tried last years echo 7.4 but on the wrong components and didn't like it at all(no power). But I don't want to rule it out the new ones as they're probably really good sails. plus they have the best colors anywhere. thanks

Hi All,
let me be clear on one thing: I have never been on custom freestyle boards.. neither did Kiri. We always did use Production boards because they are good enough to sail with. Most of all the other riders do use custom boards I wonder why? maybe their production boards are NOT good enough???? I wonder why other companies say so much about their production boards while their top riders don't use production boards. You decide,.. Bonaire boys are always on production boards ![]() Taty Frans

Jon,
The Echo's is basically a pure freestyle sail, before I change to Mauisails I have helped design the 2004 echo's.. If you remember they where already 4 battens. the 5.2 5.6 6.0 where great sails. very light, short boom, and handling was very easy and doing tricks was very easy. I still believe these sails are the best freestyle sails I have helped design and sailed with untill now. So the loco's are basically the same concept as the echo's but with a slightly better planing ability. the power of the sail is more improve. so this get you going in the lighter winds. and it's a 5 batten freestyle sail. If you need to compare the (2008) Echo's V.s The (2008) Loco. I would say that the Echo's have been getting shorter at boom, the sail feels very light and small, like when I sailed with Kiri 4.8 echo I felt like I was sailing with a slightly smaller sail. but that's great because it make's you go for every moves. On the loco's 4.8 it kinda have the same feeling of the Echo BUT the loco have a better planing ability. that's what I like better then echo's. When I was on Mauisails I used to sail with a smaller size of sail then Tonky, like if Tonky is on a 5.2 I was on the 4.8. I could have even use almost use the same sail sizes that kiri is using at a windy day. To tell you the truth I have never really sailed with the 5.6 Loco on Bonaire because the 5.2 was enough. Hi Taty,
donīt take it personally but why do your 2008 boards have a yellow colored bottom while the production boards have a white one? Now you are already using 2009 designs but last summer/autumn it was like that. |

Hi,
I don't take things on the forum personal. i am just making things clear. If you see on the starboard brochure or video it sure has a green/yellow bottom but at the end the white color on the 2008 looks better. that's why it's like that. But the 2009 will have green bottom so for sure you will like the board more ![]() Taty

Mic: even between very early production from Cobra and later "normal release" there can be slight differences. New straps and accessories are for example not always ready for the early release so you have to do with last years stuff. I guess that if Taty had a board that had a different bottom color, it could be that the early release simply had a different color but it was decided to go with white for the main release. I remember that my early production 06 Acid 73 had the 06 graphics except for the printings on the board which where not ready so they were taken from the 05 graphics.
Such small details can be changed during the produciton run, but you can be sure the shape is the same (since its still the same mould). |
