Footstraps holes

Can't seem to find that Permatex-thing where I live. Is there another solution for fixing the stripped hole or do I have to replace the whole insert ? As the hole is to big, I doubt it will do it with longer screws.

Have a look at Amazon which seems to supply such product. Alternatively a google search might find stockists in your country. For specialist product across any of my sports I find that I am ordering more and more over the internet and with reasonably quick door to door deliver times. A sign of the times I suspect.

Did you check your local auto parts store....?
How about looking at your local ball bearing or industrial supply warehouse.
As an alternative, you might be able to find the next size larger PT screw.
The reason so many have stripped this year is the thickness of the footstrap/
K-9 lock/oval toothed washer.
You may be able to fix this if you take a C-clamp and press the oval tooth washer and
K-9 lock into the nylon strapping of the footstrap so the asssembly in much thinner.
Then your existing screws may work OK.
A longer screw very well may solve the problem, just don't go beyond 32 mm as
that's been tested and does not "punch out" the back of the FS insert.

If you live in Europe it might be hard to get hold of the Permatex / Loctite Form-A-Thread product. The availability is for some strange reason very poor, if the product is sold at all in your country. You will however be able to get it over Ebay or if you are willing to pay salty freight costs, get it directly from the US.

This still does not explain why an insert stripped on my new Isonic111 ( see Ask Our Team thread ).The second screw of the first footstrap simply never tightened at all - it felt as if it was going into a piece of balsa-wood!This implies that the material the insert is made from is not up to the job or is of onconsistent quality.

As I wrote before I think that screws are too short, when you take how
thich are footstraps and K9 inserts and how much is padding (5mm) on the
board deck and material where screw catch material and starts to make trhread
from my experiance it looks to me that SCREW CATCH ONLY 4-5mm into the board!

Is this enought for your R&D to witstand force that it is on this straps.

Hi prpa,
I think that's the real source of the problem here.
The addition of the K-9 lock and the "fatter" points on the K-9 lock
are using up alot of the length of the screw.
If you push real hard, no problems as the screw will drive the points
into the nylon webbing of the footstrap and then compress the entire
assembly (K-9 lock/nylon webbing of the footstrap/Oval toothed washer)
and give you plenty of thread engagement.
If you fail to press down on the screw enough to get it to fully engage and
compress the assembly, the screw will "ream" the upper part of the plastic
insert.
So, my suggestion to "pre compress" the assembly and get those stubby points
up into the nylon webbing of the footstrap.
As I've stated, this won't be a problem in 2009 as the screw length is being increased
from 28 mm to 32 mm.
I've had no problem with the 2008 boards that I have, once I figured out that I need to "push real hard" on the screwdriver to get the threads to engage correctly, or use the "pre-compression" method with a fin screw, a 6 mm x 1.0 nut and a couple of washers.

How many people have had problems with footstrap screws being "faulty" or "stripped"

i know personally of 12 people who have bought Starboards and have had serious problems with footsrtap screws not engaging. Only in my area!!!

NO PERSON EVEN REPLIED TO THE OPEN QUESTION!

Yet here i find many people who have the same problem?

In my opinion the problem is not the length of the screws.

It is the poor quality of the plastic screw housings. Teflon screw housings are a little more expensive. Yet will never strip or fail.

I guess SB need the profit margin that cheap plastic housings offer the bottom line.

Yet a board without reliable footstraps is nothing!

The footstrap inserts stripped on all four straps on my brand new iS 101 '07. And I do take care, installing them by the book. I have'nt had this problem on my other 4 Starboard's.

Exercised the warranty since the board was virtually unsailable and got a replacement board. The inserts on the replacement board seem to hold together, but I still managed to strip one of the inserts. Not while installing the straps the first time, at that point it's usually all fine. But when rethightening after the first or second session on the water some of the screws don't grip anymore, which is the distinctive sign for stripped inserts.

Since I expected this to be a recurring problem I've bought the Permatex Forma-a-Thread stuff which I fixed the faulty insert with last night. The visual result looks very good and it was a quite easy project, hope the fix will hold under load too.

i ALWAYS use a power driver to install footstraps and i can see no reason not to.
Just turn the torque clutch down, go slowly and its fine.
Always use a bit of lubricant on the screw as well.
