Hi all.
I am in the final phases prior to purchasing the Apollo 2009 primarily for planing in as low wind as possible with my 11.6-12.5 sails @my 75kg and would be grateful if you could help me sort out the concerns below: (1) Is the 2009 model anyhow different from the 2008 (apart form graphics)? (2) Why is there no description and no technical data (actually not a single word apart from the picture???) about the Apollo on your page - does this mean that the Apollo is being put out of production? (3) Why hasn't the Apollo been chosen over the 162 for the Olympic bid - because of high wind problems or other reasons? Thank you in advance for any insightful help. i would speculate the starboard folks are concentrating on FOD.
but that is just a guess. while they are the formost innovator in the sport to try new ideas, they also seem to drop them as fast ie: the hybrids versions. |

Hi Aco,
The F162 was choose over the Apollo simply because the Formula Windsurfing Class want a board for the Olympic who fit the class and the Apollo is not in this case with the 75cm fin. The Apollo is not in the range for 2009 All the best

Try your Apollo with a big weed fin, I use a Wolfgang Lastinger 40cm Weed Fin with the mastfoot set right back, it gets going better than the 75cm fin and is a lot more controlable when the wind picks up. As Roger said feels diffent but the extra control is well worth the money. Im often the only person out on our local lake with my 2007 Apollo.

Thanks you all for the insights.

In this case I would be grateful for some more advice to figure out whether to try to find a 2008 Apollo still available or just go for the 162. My primary targets (from most to least important) are: (1) plane as early as possible (and am prepared to pump as much as I can to achieve this) (2) point upwind with as high VMG as possible in marginal winds (cca 8 kts) (3) achieve as high speed as possible on a beam reach in marginal winds (cca 8 kts) Am I correct assuming that the Apollo would give me a "measurable edge" (e.g. pulling away by few % when drag racing) over the 162 on all the above points? If the difference is "measurable" as above I would try to hunt down an Apollo 2008, otherwise I would go for the 162... Thank you in advance for any input. Rémi,
Now that FOD has been unfortunately killed, could you please bring back the Apollo for ultra light wind planing ? Too bad 2 have been scraped in this process already... Cheers ! JM |

Hi J-M,
We are working on 2010 Formula and you can be sure that we will increase our product in planning but also in high winds. All the best

Hi Aco,
If you can found one, great but if not you will be happy with the F162 particularly for planing. Which sail you will put on it? All the best

Hi Remi!

(+) NP RS-5 11.6 (+) Gaastra Nitro 4 12.0 (+) NS Warp Formula 12.5 (2004) The reason I have bought so many sails was that after the initial "boom" the Formula soon got very unpopular here and the sails were sold for very, very low prices - actually less than a single professional repair, which is why I just kept buying them instead of repairing old ones ![]() Kind Regards, Aco |

Hi Aco,
The 11,6 will be the best, plane earlier and more stable. All the best
