Default Serenity 70W fin on a FT158?

Hi Roger,

Have you ever tried the Serenity 70W fin on an FType 158? If so, did it provide any benefit (ie, earlier planing) compared with a standard 70 cm fin? It's a nice fin but it won't get much use on my Serenity so it would be nice if it was usefult for the FType ...

Thanks,

Jay

Hi Jay,
No, I don't think I've tried that fin on an F-Type 158.
I don't have an F-Type 158, so I guess that's why.
Go ahead and give it a try, but I think the wide blade 70 is going to
work OK to get you planing early, but my guess would be that it will "top out" far too early and slow you top end speed.
Give it a try and let us know how it works....?
Hope this helps,

Forget it : the 2007/2008 Drake 700 XXL Serenity fin is far too hard for low wind range on a planing Formula. On the contrary, a way softer fin is a must on FW, especially when pumping the sail in low wind.

BTW for 2009 and 2010, the Serenity gets a softer 70 cm fin too for a better gliding in low wind range.

Cheers !

JM

Hi Jean-Marc,
Hmmmm.... the Serenity fin always seemed way too big for the Serenity (in my opinion and how I sailed the Serenity) but it seemed similar in stiffness to the Apollo fin which was OK on the Apollo (also seemed a bit big, but if you put a 10.0 m2 + rig on the Apollo you might need a fin that big) but I found that a regular Deboichet Concept 68 was more to my liking with a 9.1 m2 race rig on the Apollo.
I never needed the big fins on the Serenity as the biggest rig I normally used was a 7.5 m2 Severne Glide or Sailworks Retro.
Also, Jay has/had an F-Type 158..... quite a different animal than a full on Formula board.
I found the F-Types worked best for we with smaller fins.
Hope this helps,
