In the wind between 5 to 10 ks with a 9.5m sail, which one is going to plane early?

I agree, formula. The wide tail & longer fin will pop it up earlier, but I would guess about 2 knots sooner.

Body weight and pumping skills play a big role here regarding wind minimums to plane, but regardless, the formula will be first to plane.

Hi Emil,

Formula can be the first to plane, yes but with more active pumping than UltraSonic 147 but the difference not so big anyway. The big difference is for Up Wind Formula will unbeatable but on reach that will be the contrary and much more easier.

Under 10 knots a UltraSonic 147 is faster on reach than a Formula HWR and with a lot less physical demand, now is important to know what will be your program. If it's race in Formula Windsurfing Class, sure that Formula is the way to go, but if you want to have Fun Time in very light winds, UltraSonic will be way better.

Guess both of them can be put planning in around 6 knots of breeze by a good pumping sailor.
Thats about the same that AHD achieved more than ten years ago by one of the first early planers, the AHD 310 Pro Race.

Will we ever see some board get planning in 4 knots?
