To Remi
Will the severn raceboard sail featured in the magazine be replacing the phantom 9.5 sail? When is it expected to be available? |

I can't find any specs for this sail.
cams, battens, luff, boom, weight? Is it just one size, 9.5m or 8.5m? how is the downhall tension compared with the starboard sail? As our australian racing season is ending this month, I am thinking about a board for next year. Are there any changes likely to the pahantom 320 and 380 by next August? HI,
I had the chance to get hold of a used Phantom Race 9.5 sail for my raceboard and I like it. ![]() Unfortunately many people say it is more a strong wind sail. ![]() As I do not have enough budget for two sails, is there any chance or any possible change to make the sail more a allrounder, so also more suitable for low wind conditions? May be by inserting new battens? Is it difficult ot exchange the battens and how will it be done? Is there something like a handbook available? Thanks and kind regards Knud. |

Hi Knud
Not really, in Race-Board most of the racers have 2 9.5 sails, one for light winds and the other one for medium to strong, in this case the Severne and the Starboard one. Do you use adjustable out haul and down haul, this help help a lot to tune this kind of sails for light to strong winds? All the best

But when the wind gets strong,we will have something about 20-25 knots average which I can handle well with a 9,5. But we have in between really often gusts which are going up to 30 knots and a bit more and here I am not able to hold the 9,5 anymore. Also with maximum Down- and Outhaul, what I am using, to get the sail flat and the top and back leech open, I am not able to hold it. It just throws me away or I need to open the sail and loose too much speed. Therefore the right sail sizes for me are a 9,5 which I can use from 2 till ~22 knots and something smaller like 8,5 (7,5 is too small already) for winds 25 knots and higher. I can not believe that a 9,5 with complete down- and outhaul is faster than an 8,5 with less down- and outhaul in stong wind conditions of more than 25 knots. Or am I wrong here? |

Hi Knud,
You are really not wrong, my favorite choice are Severne Race-Board 9.5 and Overdrive 8.5. Two 9.5 work only in place you never get really strong winds. When I make the Severne Race-Board it was to have more light wind performance than the Star-Board one who was in the line since some years but with out forget the wide wind range. Then easy to jump to a smaller sail who will give you more performances in strong than any 9.5. Hope this help. All the best

Hi Remi,
thank you very much to get from you this confirmation. It really helps me. So I will use the Phantom Race 9,5 and try to get a used RSX 8,5. This should work for me till end of 2012. Kind regards Knud. |

Here is a link to a Picasa Album of the 2011 Windpower Championships (Fond du Lac, WI) race in September. Four racers on the 9.5 Severne RB, and another on the 8.5.
We had 20+ mph winds on Saturday and the sails held tight. Much less wind on Sunday and they performed well in that as well. Regards, Arden, EL-11 http://arden-el11.blogspot.com/ Last edited by ardenalan; 16th December 2011 at 12:30 PM. |
