Board below Ultrasonic

I have an Ultrasonic (carbon) and use it with 9.0 (RAM F11) and 11.0 (TR-7 XT) sails in 11-20 knots. My other sails are 7.8, 7.0 and 6.3 (all RAM F11.) I am an intermediate of 94 kg. The US is an excellent board, very controllable even over 20 kts. I used to own a JP SLW 90 which is also nice but the US is much more fun at higher speeds and so much better for jibes.

As I like the US so much I want to buy an iSonic below my US for 7.8 and 9.0 sails for 15-22 kts and a more choppy conditions (to replace my Exocet Warp 78). I am considering the 117 and not the 117 wide as the 117 wide is more intended for lower weights (<80kg) and I expect the 117 to be better in choppy conditions than the 177 wide. Please give your comments and advice.

Both the UltraSonic and the iSonic 117 (not wide) were in a windsurfing magazine board test that I participated in last spring.

The iSonic was super duper fast and would be real good with your 7.0 and 7.8. You could use it with a 9.0 but I would think most of the time you would want to be on the UltraSonic in 9.0 conditions. The iSonic nose is so thin that it's a little bit tricky to tack (I'm 75 kg).

As far as control in chop I'm not sure it will be as easy as the Warp 78. It's so fast with such a wide flat nose and tail that it's kind of scary. Not necessarily uncontrollable, just scary.

With 6.3, 7.0 & 7.8, the best iSonic will be the 107 to get the best performances, 117 will be to big particularly for the 6.3 but if you use 7.0 and 7.8 at 94 kgs 117 can be an option. The bottom of this board is a bit similar as 107 with Vee to be more easy in chops.

To be more precise, I want a board for my 7.8 and 9.0 sails.
For the smaller (7.0 and 6.3) sails I now have a JP supersport 118 and a Lorch Glider 105. I might replace them in the future for an iSonic 97.

So, at 94kgs and 7.8 and 9.0 sails in a bit choppy conditions should I take the 117 or the 117 wide?

Hi Mark,

If you're also planning for the IS97, then I would go for the IS117 underneath the US147.
You'll have a luxury setup like I have, but then with the newer Isonics.
It's really a luxury setup I find, because each of my sails (except for the largest and smallest) I can use on 2 boards i.e.

US147: 10.9 and 8.8
IS122: 8.8 and 7.8
IS101: 7.8 and 6.7
IS87: 6.7 and 5.7

I'm thinking for the next season to reduce my number of boards from 4 to 3, though.
i.e replace the IS101 and IS122 by a newer IS107.
Still haven't made up my mind.

PS: I'm 87 kg.

Hi Mark,

go for the iSonic wide. Endless control and enough volume for your weight. You can use 7,8 up to 9,5 and the board works great with a 46 - 47 cm long fin for you. In case it should get strong, get a 44/45 in.

I have decided to go for the iS117 and the iS97, both 2012 in carbon. The 117 is already in my trailer and the 97 will arrive tomorrow!!!! Broke and happy like a little child withe these beauties.

Im90 kg and whith this boards im absolutely happy covering all winds for my slaom sailing and only when stroger i use my freestylewave
You cant go wrong whith the isonics , they work fantastic, i will say that choose the right sail and fins and setting is clearly the difficulty to go perfect , but dont worry forthe boards

Yesterday I had the first session on the iS97 with RAM F11 7.0 and Select V.Max 37 fin. I was afraid that the iS97 would be much more difficult to sail than the freerace boards I used to sail, I am just an average surfer. I restarted windsurfing, after a 20 years break, 2.5 years ago. Wind was up to 24 knots.

Perfect control from the start, sensational speed and top in the jibes. What a pitty I didn't buy the iSonics much earlier!!!! Thank you Starboard, the iS97 is simply perfect.
