Isonic 117 w or ultrasonic

Hello, I basically sail in 9-12 knots, I'm 82 kg, with 9.0m2. No racing, just going fast and enjoying planning. I like the isonic. What board should I pick? 117 wide, ultrasonic? Or may be something in the middle?

Hi Marcos,

With 9m at your weight and 117 2013 or 117 Wide 2012 you will perfect on the best size sail for this board, best combination.

For the UltraSonic 147 is working perfectly also with the advantage that you can go bigger and to be a really killer in super light winds.

Hi Remi,

Can I please ask?... The minimum recommended sail size for the ultrasonic is 7.5. What does this mean in terms of the wind range of the board? In other words, what is the maximum wind force the board can handle without getting over powered?

Also, is it easier with such wide boards like the ultrasonic to handle bigger sails in stronger winds, in relation to, say, a freeride/freerace board? What if a smaller size sail is used with the ultrasonic? (e.g. a 7.0)

Hi Kyriakos,

With wider boards you can always use bigger sails longer than narrow boards, just physique about leverage. But also going to to small is like put a small car engine et F1 frame.

Yes can use 7.5 on it with out problems with a smaller fin but this will be not the most efficient sail on it.

To get the best of the best of this board turn around this sizes 8.5 to 10 and you can go to 7.0 to 12.0 too.

If you can't decide between 117W or US147, think about the following.

When you have wide open water with steady winds, probably the 117W will be the best choice.

On the contrary, when you are on a lake or on the sea in (side-)offshore conditions, you can use a board that helps you plane through lulls and always brings you back to the starting point because of its excellent pointing capacity (large width in combination with a large fin). In this case the US147 will be the best choice.

Although the Isonics point very well, they are developed with 1 prime goal, i.e. to win PWA down wind slalom races, often with huge overpowered sails
