I have just got my hands on a 2011 8.6m Turbo and was wondering if it will be ok with my Neil Pryde X9 490 mast that I currently have. The reason I ask is that I've seen posts on here saying that North Masts will not allow the sail to perform correctly.
Obviously Severnes own masts are perfectly matched to the sail characteristics but I have been told that Tushingham is a good alternative, are there any others? The reason that I ask is that it may be some time before the shop can get their hands on a Severne mast (Red line/Enigma) due to the non existance of an importer here in the UK this year. Martin |

No they wont work. Severne are hard top, NP are Flex.

Thanks Maximus, are there any other manufacturers of hard top masts out there? It's just that I am having trouble sourcing any severne kit here in the UK. Martin

Here's a good reference for mast bends ... http://www.unifiber.net/2011/mast-selector

I use 2011 460 cm NP X6 with 2011 Naish Grand Prix 7,0 and it works great.
Rigged 2009 Gator 7,5 with X6 460 and works perfect, better than my older Blue Line mast. A year or 2 ago some pro riders used Severne masts in NP Race Sails. So I don’t know how valid this mast selector is. I would give it a try. Remove all spacers first and then rig the sail with the X9, then tune the sail with different spacers if necessary. Maybe it works fine and you safe some money. I just had to buy a new Enigma 490 for my 2010 Overdrive, because id did not rig proper on an older Redline mast. Now it works fine. Cheers |

LK how old was your redline mast? surely they wouldn't have changed the diameter/bend characteristics.
What spacers are you on about? I haven't seen any spacers on my Overdrive. I'm pretty sure that all manufacturers masts will work with each others sails but to what effectiveness is the question. Until anyone tries the same sail with different masts then we wont get a definitive answer. I suppose a softer mast will spill the gusts better and therefore feel better but wont deliver as much low end drive. |
