What is your fastest 2 Sec GPS with an 8.5?

Sounds like an odd topic, but it would be interesting to see just how fast an 8.5 sail can go!

Heres Mine:

80 kg / Hyper 111 / 8.4 RS6 / 41cm RS Viper
Wind 12 - 16-18 / 30 cm chop
Fotrex 101
2 Sec / 28.44 knots

I am picking with nice flat water and consistant wind, perhaps 30 knots would be about it.

I did 28.6 knots on a Carve 145 with a 9.4 Tushingham Lightning/45 cm weed fin, once with a Garmin e-trex. Dont know if it was for 2 seconds though... Guess there's a difference between a max peak and constant (2 sec) max...

A Hyper with 8.5 should easily be able to do +30 knots with an 8.5 in the right conditions....

Should be able to do 30 plus knots. I have an 8.5 KA Slalom on my Hyper 105. Usually change down size sail when GPS max around 30 knots. I have a 32.0 2 sec max and several above 30.

The best so far I did with HS105 & RS2 8.2 sail was 30.2 knots Vmax in 12-15 knots of wind on flat water. To do so, the key ingredient is fin size, type and stiffness between either a Deboichet speed-slalom 32 cm medium stiffness or a Select Elite Slam S03 32 cm hard stiffness. The Select is much more spinout resistant than the Deboichet in overpowered +15 knots of wind with my 65 kg as I can crank as hard as I want without any problems.

So, if you want to increase your Vmax, I suggest you start to use smaller slalom fins, especially on HS. Check that old thread between race vs slalom fin's choice for HS : http://2006.star-board.com/forum/askteam/read.asp?ID=4615

From experience I would suggest that doing 32 knots on a hyper is pretty good! In fact, it is my firm believe that this board does not go much faster. I used to own one, and it had a definite top speed that you really couldn't press further. For me, it was around the 32knot mark, and I am no slouch.

Where the HS always excelled was speed over distance. The board has an incredible capacity to keep planing on apparent wind and get through lulls at pace. Over distance, this will win you races. However, there are boards out there (ST, iS, Sonics and perhaps even smaller Carves) that have a higher top end than the HS used to

Not true. Roger van Tongeren (±100 kg; nicknamed "podjur48") did almost 40 knots (72.7 km/h) as a Vmax with HS111, a RS4 6.2 m2 and a very small fin (26 cm if I recall correctly) back in 2004 during a pretty windy day at the Horst Strand speed strip in the Netherlands. A video and his GPS tracks were freely available for review to anyone at that time (http://forum.windsurfing.nl/viewtopic.php?t=6472).
He next did ±42 knots on Sonic 100 (75.7 km/h) and ± 40 knots on Sonic 90 (72.9 km/h), so HS is certainly not a slug to somebody who truly has the skills (and balls) to go fast...Oh, BTW, Roger is the timekeeper on gps-speedsurfing.com.

Still plenty of room to press further as you said...

With a 6.5 and my Hyper 111/34cm drake I have done 34.3 knots. I belive they can be very fast in the right conditions.

Its interesting to see guys doing 32 knots with an 8.5, gives me something to aim for! I think the real limitations are simply where you sail. Where i go it gets choppy, sand banks come along to quick when you bear off, and the wind is extremely gusty.

Maximus / minamus You'll have to borrow my small 31cm or 29 cm fin on a powered 8.4 day and see what you can get out of it. Didn't think of that last weekend.
