Default iS 87 or 94 with RS6 5.4 and 6.2

Hi,

Which board is the best option for RS6 5.4 and 6.2, 87 or 94? I will use it for slalom and speedsurfing in flat to choppy conditions and shallow waters. I weigh 90+ kg's. My larger board is a falcon 120. With this board I will use a RS6 7.2 and 6.2. 6.2 will be overlap sail.

What are the (dis)advantages from the 87 and 94 concerning performance and range of use with these sails?

What are the sweetspot sail sizes of the 87 and 94?

Is it possible to have a good use of the RS6 7.2 with the 94. Not really relevant but more as information and in special conditions.

Thanks, Hans

Nb: I have used the sonic85 this spring with GTX 6.0 and it was great!

I have bought the 87. The first session says this is the right choice. It handles the 6.2 perfectly. I'm really looking forward to the next session, maybe with the 5.4!

Date : Monday, November 13, 2006
Spot : Strand Horst, Netherlands
Board : Starboard iSonic 87
Sail : Neilpryde RS6 6.2
Fin : Lessacher Chameleon 24
Average speed : 60.98 kmh (65.0 61.5 60.8 59.3 58.2)
Max. GPS (display) : 66.4 kmh
Max. 2 sec. (software) : 66.9 kmh
100 m run : 66.0 kmh
250 m run : 64.5 kmh
500 m run : 60.8 kmh
Windspeed : 15 knots
Windgusts : 28 knots

Remarks : Today conditions at horst became very nice during the day. At first we had marginal conditions with SW'lies, but during the afternoon strong and gusty W'lies were spreading out over the Lake. Between te dams and Harderwijk conditions were very good for speeding. The water remained very flat at times. Because the water was also shallow and covered with decaying weedplants I used my 24 chameleon. At first no really good speeds I could make with 55 max. But after I put the mast 1 cm to the rear the board was much looser.

In the best gust I had I broke my 500 mtr pr from 58.9 to 60.8 and made the year best times on 250 mtr and shorter distances.

My enemy today appeared to be my body. My arms became weak and I even had to let go a speedrun with potential at 63 km/h because of crash risk. I could not hold the boom anymore. I would have liked to make some more good runs but wind was vanishing. Partly I had to walk again.

The iSonic87 is really a nice and easy board. Really plug and play. It feels like the board has loads of potential and hopefully with some more good days I really can break my average. Now it came from 60.4 to 61.0, but there's a lot of room left. I'rm really looking forward to use this board with the 22 chameleon and 5.4 RS6. I think it may be even a faster combination!

Boogie, Walther, Martin, John and Gerwin also where enjoying their day. Martin stopped at the moment the nicest part of the day started. Maybe the gusts where to heavy for him to handle;-)

hi Hans
I have the Isonic 94 and I can say you it's great with 6m and 7m GTX.You can try 7.2 witout problem. And I think so it's good for 5.4.I try it with more 40 knts on a flat spot with 6 GTX ,a very big speed and so very easy in the strong wind. The jibe full speed witout problem.I try it so with 7 GTX in 15 20 knts and little wave 1m it's so very safe in the speed.A very large range.Of course you must buy fins.for me 28 and 32 Gazoil (equal 30 and 34 select or other)and perhaps 36 for 7.2...B)

Thanks Julian and Donpietro!

I think the 87 really is the best option in my case. It handles the largest sail I will use with is, the RS6 6.2, very nicely. So the 94 is no necessary. I think the 5.4 will be the better option with the 87 also!

Currently due to shallow waters at my home spot it's very difficult to use normal fins. Also decaying weed is stlll a problem. In spring with 25 cm more water I will use my Select Evo fins;

RS 6.2: 31 or 33 cm
RS 5.4: 29 cm

I just give it a try then which sizes fits best. Now I will use the lessacher chameleon fins which also have good speed performance but with its rake of 45 degrees are very save in shallow and weedrich waters!

RS 6.2: 24 cm
RS 5.4: 22 cm

With these sizes you almost need no water to get the fun started!

Hans, how will you ever get planing with such small fin sizes? I mean less is more in case of speed, but remember that with such small fin sizes, the board will start to stick to the water, instead of skim over it...

Julian,

why? I mean: I gladly put a Deboichet SL2 30 on my Sonic 95 when it's OK for my 6.6 TR-2, and a 32 when it could be better for a 6.6, so a Select Evo 31 or 33 isn't that small for a 6.2, and nor is a 29 for a full on 5.4. Those 22 and 24 fins are weed fins, and then a totally different story (shorter/lower AR/much more raked).

I agree geo!

Remark: This monday Speedspot Horst seems to become very nice with slightly offshore SSW'ly breezes becoming fresh to strong, force 5 to6, with gusts up to around 30 to 35 Kts! If this will be true it will becoming a really nice testing day for the iSonic87 with Sandy Beach like chop over a large area. I allready try to awake the Dutch and Belgian speedies to join me and speed up to higher levels this day!
