During my last sail with my Futura 93l I was mostly completely over powered on my 5.8m (wind : 15- 35knts). However, once near the beach I felt I had good power in my sail but the board simply wouldn't free up of the water.
Compared to the session I had had before, the board felt much stickier to the water, even though my mast base and sail were tuned the same. After derigging I realized that the only possible variable was my boom height, which had lowered about 5-10cm while sailing over powered in super tough chop. Still not 100% sure this is to blame... Has anyone else actually felt a noticeable difference in early planing due to moving the boom up? Cheers, Adrien

Lowering the boom you will have more control with heigh velocity, but it will be more dificult to make planning.
I think one of the best speedsurfers in the world sails with a very low boom to have maximal control, and with max. control, it goes faster. With the boom higher up, the board is more lively, are planning more easily, but with less control. with regards, JJ |

For sure the boom height difference might have affected how the board felt.
But just to throw a curve ball in this, on my wave boards, I actually put the boom a cm or to higher in choppy or super windy weather. On such a board in such conditions, you will bounce around a bit anyway, and with the boom higher the board runs a bit more free which will make the hit it takes up front not transfer as much to the rest of the kit. In smoother waters, I use a lower boom since it enables a better body position int he wave riding. But for you: yes, try the boom a bit higher. |

But, when you put the boom up higher you will feel a strange situation. some times you will have the sensation that ther is no power to the forward leg and the foot is almost going out of the footstrap. Then its time to lower the boom.

Hi John, thanks for pointing that out. I've noticed many people talking about this sensation when going super fast, but I've NEVER had this, which suggests that in general my boom is never too high.
