Default Longboard questions

I am thinking of switching from my Exocet Pacer Pro to a new longboard. So here are a few questions I have:
1. Which is faster, Kona Elite 380 or Starboard Phantom 380?
2. What is price of Phantom 380 in US, when will be it available and where do I get one from?
3. Are these new raceboards faster than the old ones? (I might be able to purchase a hardly used Sailboard Masterclass 375 raceboard for a very low price)
4. Are custom raceboards eligible to race in "Raceboard class" races? (also might be able to purchase an older custom board)

thanks for any and all answers to these questions.

Dennis

Based on results in worlds, new boards are not significantly faster than old ones if at all.
For eligibility for racing, You had best check with the local club you want to race at. Unless you expect to win every race, I would say you would be welcome to sail almost anything you want. If you plan to go to world championship, you would be better to stick with the approved models.

Tony,
thanks for the reply, what you posted is pretty much what I have been thinking.
I suspect that the speed of a windsurf board has just as much, if not more, to do with the sailor than it does the board.

I used to race a Mistral Equipe II XR, which I felt was pretty much the best racing longboard ever built for all wind speeds. There were better light wind boards (division II) and better high wind boards (Phantom or other hybrids), but for overall efficiency, the Mistral was fantastic. I raced it in winds ranging from under 5 knots to over 25 knots. It was also amazingly fast on reaches. I had an F2 Lighting Race before the Mistral, but it was no match compared to the Mistral.

For a while, Mistral was building and promoting an Equipe III, but it never went into production. Too bad, it may have been a success.

My take on all the current longboards and hybrids is that they are all too heavy, and have not benefited from all the lightweight technology that is out there. The old Equipe II XR was about 11.5 kg (my recollection) and the Phantom 380 is 14.2 kg (the 320 is not listed). The Kona Elite is 13kg. While the Kona is pretty close, it will be interesting to see how it will do if matched with an old Equipe II.

I have a 1985 Mistral Superlight that I bought new in 1984 that will smoke the Kona One (15.5 kg) in light winds. I suspect it would beat the Elite as well in under 8 knots if similar sized sails were used. I only race it once or twice a year with it's original 6.3 dacron regatta sail, and I can still stay close or ahead of many of the old and new longboards with 8-10 meter sails in light winds.

Thanks for the replies and info.

I was really hoping, however, from an answer from a Starboard person and would
really like to find out who is selling the Phantom 380 in the US and how much
they cost.

thanks again.

Hi Dennis778,

Please contact the USA distributor, he will answer you.

Ken, you was faster on the Equipe II than a Lechner in light winds???

Interresting weight comparaison but it will be interest to compare volume and durability. I have this boards in the past, F2, Mistral and Fanatic, I can't finish one season with the board. Fanatic have the record with 7 boards brake in one year, Mistral 3 and F2 1. At this time I was doing windsurf everydays from 3 to 35 knots. I remember that I have to put 1,5 kgs on the Fanatic, 0,5 on the Mistral and nothing on the F2 to be Race-Board Class Valid with the 16kgs. Overall the Fanatic Mega Cat (1st version) at this time was the best.
The Race-Board class now is full production board no more prototype and also with 9.5mē sails.

Hope this help

All the best

Remi,

Although I never raced against a Lechner I would guess the Mistral Equipe II XR was no match against one in light winds. As I said, in light winds, the Div. II boards were faster.

In strong winds, the old course slalom boards were a little faster and the current hybrids are probably faster too since they perform much like the formula boards. Of course, Formula boards will beat anything in moderate to strong winds (over 15 knots).

No board does everything exceptionally well. There is always a compromise of some sort, that's why Starboard has such a diverse line up of boards.
