Default Futura 111 or Kode 112(3)?

Hi Team,
Hi All,

I'm about to buy another board, just trying to decide...

weight: ~ 80-82kg
wind range: 14-22 kts
water: 0.5-1.5 waves / chop / random waves (lots of boats)

I have enough boards for less and more wind so please consider only the above parameters

The descision boils down to:
will the K112/3 be fast enough with a 6.8/7.5 in the 14-18kts range to catch air (I guess the FU111 would)?
is the FU113 designed to bump around (survive it in 14-22 kts with 0.5-15m waves) (I guess the K112 has no problem here)?

Thanks for any input

When you say winds 14-22 kts do you mean lulls at 14 and gusts at 22 or averages at 14 to averages at 22 kts?

At 77 kilos I’m not too far off your weight and I wouldn’t want to be on a 110+ liter board with a wind average of 20 kts much less 22 and definitely not with a 6.8 unless racing.

So, if 14 to 22 knt averages I don’t think either board would work with 6.8/7.5 rigs. If talking about lulls at 14 & gusts at 22 the Kode will be fast enough to catch air, especially with .5 to 1.5 meter waves. The Futura will not be much fun with the waves over 1 meter. The Futura can be sailed in waves, but that is really Kode territory.

sorry, not specific enough.

14-22 kts means, solid 14 with gusts (on some days going up to 22kts, other days 18 or less).
On these days wind will be in a range 14-20 or 14-22 or 16-20, 16-22 and of course the wind won't stay that way too long, usually dies a bit so defintely 110ish board.

Can the F111 stand being bumped around (fly into the sky and land without falling apart) or is K112/3 better choice cause not much slower and is made for being bumped around...

Thumbs up

Hi Duracell. Water state will make a difference here. I sail a Kode 112 in quite lumpy conditions. I use a 6.4 and 7.4 on it (mostly the bigger rig). I have had lots of freeride and slalom boards and found them to fast to enjoy in the swell. They don't jump anywhere near as well as the Kode and don't turn on the bay waves as well ( especially the bottom turn at speed) . I'm 90kgs and can get this boards going in 13 kts using the swell to take off. I also use an aftermarket fin as the stock one didn't work for me. The Kode is definately the pick to jump and have control. If you have relatively flat water with waves then the Futura might be okay. I have tried other brand boards in these conditions and the Kode 112 wins hands down over the rest. It is the only Starboard I have left in a fleet of seven boards. I won't be changinging it.

It’s not an issue of can the Futura survive jumping, the board can. You have to consider the landings. With outboard strap settings the Futura will be more difficult to land jumps then the Kode with more inboard strap settings. You are far more likely to spinout on landings with the Futura then the Kode.

The Futura is made for flat water and choppy-knee high and lower- condition blasting. If the swell/chop gets over knee high where the board can not freely ride up and down by simply flexing you legs, then you should consider the Kode. The Futura has greater speed and the Kode greater maneuverability.

I have a Kode 112 and Love it, its still a reasonably quick board, its designed with cut outs in the rear and has a fairly big fin as standard, on Lake Garda last week I was easily keeping up with the freeride boards and it handled the messy chop well allowing for some nice 'chop hops' in the process.

I also sail this board in Shoreham, England where we have cross/onshore wave conditions, it works really nicely there too, I would agree that this board Jumps really well. I sailed Futura's in Egypt last year at all sizes, they are lovely boards but they definitley have a more slalom/freeride feel.

I dont think you'll be disapointed with a Kode,

Default sailrange-windrange

How big sail /strong winds will work with the kode 112.?

I am 89 kg and own a tabou rocket 135 as my biggest board
My sail quiver is 8.0 6.5 5.5 and 4,7. all no cams

Is the kode to big as a smallest board for me? For 6.5-4-7 sailing?

I usually sail in choppy conditions and is an advancing intermediate surfer.

MOP, if you waterstart reliably then the Kode 112 is too big for you as the smaller board. A board with about 102-106 liter of volume and some 64 cm of width should work well for you, and still be a reasonably easy transition to smaller boards.
